Understanding Economy 7 meters
Economy 7 is an electricity tariff with different pricing structures according to the time of day.
The energy you use at night costs less per kWh than energy used at other times.
Economy 7 discounted hours of operation
It's called Economy 7 because for 7 hours each night you will pay less for the electricity you use.
If your meter was installed by British Gas, the cheaper night time tariff runs from 00:00-07:00 GMT/winter months and 01:00-08:00 BST/summer months.
If British Gas didn't install the meter, cheaper tariff times will usually be 7 hours between 10pm and 9am. If you wish to know specific times please contact our live chat agents.

I’d like to switch my Economy 7 meter to a Single Rate meter
Economy 7 meters when used correctly (based on how and when you use electricity) could be cheaper when compared with single rate meters. We can check if this is the case for you based on your previous electricity use. If you would like to find out more about changing your Economy 7 or restricted meter to a single rate meter, please contact us on live chat
Electric Storage Heaters
Storage heaters are an alternative to central heating that store heat at off-peak times and release it gradually during the day. They work well with Economy 7 tariffs as they can make the most of the off-peak prices that this tariff offers.
See our electric storage heaters guide for more information on what they are and how they work with Economy 7.
