Frequently Asked Questions

Cost & efficiency
Survey & installation

How much does a heat pump cost?

Our prices for heat pump installation start from £1,119 (with the £7,500 government grant included). However, your actual price will vary depending on a number of factors, such as the size of your property and the complexity of the installation. We’ll give you an indicative price online straight away – and then offer you a free, no-obligation home survey to give you a more detailed quote.

What government grants are available for air source heat pumps?

From October 2023, the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives homeowners in England and Wales a £7,500 grant towards the cost of a heat pump.

For homeowners in Scotland, The Home Energy Scotland grant Oalso gives £7,500 towards the cost of an air source heat pump – plus a potential £1,500 extra if you live in a rural area.

Applying for the grant couldn’t be simpler. British Gas will do all the paperwork for you and include the grant as a discount on the price you pay.

Can you finance a heat pump?

Yes. If you don’t want to pay for your heat pump in a single payment, British Gas offers a whole range of options for spreading the cost into manageable monthly amounts.

Are air source heat pumps expensive to run?

The only fuel needed to run ASHP heating is electricity. The amount of electricity required depends on the size of your home and also the quality of your insulation. The better the insulation, the less heat your home will lose – and the less energy will be needed to operate the heat pump. A heat pump in a well-insulated home should be cheaper to run than a traditional gas boiler.

What is the British Gas heat pump energy offer?

It’s an exclusive offer for customers who buy a heat pump with British Gas. You get a discounted rate of 14p per kWh on the electricity your heat pump uses for 12 months.

How do I get the British Gas heat pump energy offer?

Once your installation is complete, we’ll email you with a link to sign up for the heat pump energy offer.

If you already have a new boiler quote, it’ll include the contact details of your heating adviser so you can get in touch with them directly to discuss your new boiler.

What are the steps involved in a heat pump installation with British Gas?

Getting a heat pump installed is a new experience for most people, so we’ve tried to make it as easy as possible – and we make sure you’re supported every step of the way. After getting your online estimate, you can arrange a telephone appointment with one of our heat pump team to ask any questions about the estimate and next steps, then we’ll get you booked in for your free, no-obligation home survey. After that, if you’re happy with your quote, we’ll arrange your install. And of course, we’ll be on hand afterwards to help you if you have any problems.

What happens during the home survey?

At British Gas, every heat pump installation project begins with a free home survey carried out by one of our experts. We’ll take a couple of hours to look at your home and your current heating system, then recommend the perfect heat pump set-up for you.

And if we don’t think a heat pump is the right heating solution – because your home isn’t well insulated enough, for example – we’ll talk you through the alternatives we can offer, like the latest energy-efficient boilers.

Do British Gas give fixed-price quotes?

Yes. After your home survey, we’ll give you a fixed-price quote that includes everything you need to get going with a heat pump.

We’re confident that you won’t find better value on your heat pump installation. If you do find a lower quote for the same work from another accredited installer, just share the paperwork with us and we’ll offer the same price. That’s our Price Match Guarantee.

How long does a heat pump installation take with British Gas??

Most British Gas heat pump installation projects take five days to complete. We usually schedule these for Monday to Friday, to avoid disruption to your home over the weekend.

Who will be on the heat pump installation team?

We usually have four people on the installation team – three heating engineers and one electrician. One of the heating engineers will be the lead engineer. They’ll oversee all work, be your main point of contact, and answer any questions you have.

How long will I be without hot water??

The longest you can expect to be without hot water is one day – although we can often find a way to make sure there’s no interruption at all. For example, we might be able to use an immersion heater on your cylinder to keep things working while we get the heat pump set up properly.

Can you replace a gas boiler with a heat pump?

Yes, absolutely. Most of our installation jobs involve swapping a gas boiler with a low-carbon heat pump – and then making the necessary changes to the rest of the home’s heating system.

8. Will you remove my old boiler for me??

We’ll responsibly dispose of any parts of your old heating system that you no longer need, as part of your fixed-price quote.

A lot of people no longer need a gas connection when they make the switch to a heat pump. If that’s the case for you, we’ll cap your old supply and make it safe.

Is planning permission needed to install an air source heat pump?

No. Unless you live in a listed building or in a conservation area, you won’t need planning permission for a heat pump. They’re classified as a permitted development.

How much does a boiler service cost?

The cost of a boiler service in the UK can vary. The price you pay for a boiler service depends on several factors, like the type of boiler you have, how old it is and where in the country you live.

It’s important to have your boiler serviced regularly because not only will doing so keep it in top condition and running as efficiently as possible, but your warranty may not be valid if you don’t.

At British Gas, we give you a choice of how to get a boiler service. You can either book a standalone single boiler service, sign up for an annual boiler service, or take out our HomeCare boiler cover which includes your annual boiler service at no extra cost.

    • £99 for a one-off boiler service with no ongoing commitment
    • £7.75 a month for an annual boiler service contract
    • From £21 a month for HomeCare boiler cover

How efficient is my gas boiler?

The more efficient your boiler is, the more heating you’ll get for the money you spend on running it. Our guide to boiler efficiency explains this in more detail. And we’ve also got some tips to improve your boiler's efficiency.

Every new boiler we offer is A-rated for efficiency, and an energy-efficient new boiler could help you lower your gas bill – and cut your carbon footprint too.
